Set a Photo to the Facebook Cover Photo Size (820×312)
A cover photo shows at different ratios on desktop and mobile, so the safe move is an exact 820×312. The panel is already set to that size, and the same cards cover avatar, group cover and Story.

Settings
A Facebook Page uses several image placements, each with its own size and ratio: the cover photo is 820×312, the avatar is 180×180 and a shared image is 1200×630. The panel below opens on the cover photo size — switch placements with a single card click.
Facebook cover photo size and the other placements
| Placement | Target size | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Page cover | 820 × 312 | about 2.63:1 |
| Profile picture | 180 × 180 | 1:1 |
| Group cover | 1640 × 856 | about 1.92:1 |
| Event banner | 1920 × 1005 | about 1.91:1 |
| Shared image / link preview | 1200 × 630 | about 1.91:1 |
| Story | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
The cover and avatar are the smallest things on the page and also the most seen. Uploading at the size they are actually displayed avoids a second compression and a second crop.
Why covers keep getting cropped
Facebook displays the cover at different ratios on desktop and mobile. At 820×312 the desktop layout shows all of it; the mobile layout narrows it and the outer edges disappear. Keeping faces and text in the horizontal middle keeps both views safe.
The panel below defaults to Pad: the whole photo fits inside the 820×312 frame and the empty sides are filled with a blurred copy, so nothing is lost. To cover the frame instead, switch to Fill — it crops the extra edges and always keeps the centre.
How to resize a Facebook cover
- Drop your image into the box below. The target is already set to 820 × 312 with Pad selected.
- Pick another placement if you need one. Avatar, group cover, event banner, shared image and Story sit on the same row; choose Custom to type your own width and height.
- Keep everything or cover the frame. Pad keeps the whole photo and blurs the empty sides; Fill crops the extra edges instead.
- Download the result. For a batch, drop them all in and take one ZIP.
Three common Facebook image mistakes
- Pushing cover text to the edge. The mobile layout trims the sides, so keep important text toward the middle.
- Uploading a non-square avatar. The circular crop distorts a wide image, so crop it to 1:1 before uploading.
- Using the wrong shared-image ratio. Anything other than 1.91:1 gets cropped, and the half that matters may be the half that goes.
If the file is still too heavy
Resizing fixes the pixels, not the weight. Facebook re-compresses whatever you upload, and a lighter file uploads faster, so run the result through the image compressor. For ratio-based work rather than exact pixels, use the general resize tool. A Story or Reel needs a 9:16 canvas instead, so resize for Instagram runs the same one-click flow, and 1920×1080 covers event banners and widescreen covers at a fixed frame.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Facebook cover photo size?+
820×312 pixels. That is the recommended size for a Facebook Page cover photo. Larger uploads work too, but the mobile layout is narrower, so keep anything important toward the middle.
Why does my cover photo get cropped on mobile?+
The desktop cover is close to 2.63:1 while the mobile view is narrower, so the sides are trimmed. Keep faces, logos and text in the horizontal middle and both views stay safe.
Does the Facebook cover photo size change in 2026?+
The 820×312 recommendation has held for several years, and nothing in the current layout changes it. If Facebook adjusts the frame later, re-crop from the same original rather than stretching the old export.
What size is a Facebook profile picture?+
A profile picture displays at 180×180 in a circle. Upload at least 320×320 for sharpness; Facebook crops it to a circle automatically, so centre the face.
What size is a shared image or link preview?+
1200×630, close to 1.91:1. That is the safest size for link previews and shared images; a different ratio gets cropped by Facebook.
What size is a Facebook Story?+
1080×1920 at 9:16, the same as an Instagram Story. Pad keeps the whole photo inside the frame, while Fill crops the extra edges.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?+
No. Everything runs in your browser on your own device. Nothing is transmitted, no account is needed and the original stays on your computer.
Can I resize several cover photos at once?+
Yes. Drop in a whole folder, apply one placement size to the batch, and download every result as a single ZIP when it finishes.
